40 minute exposure at night under a full moon

This image was my very first attempt at photographing a moonlit scene.  I had no idea how long I’d need to open the shutter, all I knew was that it would be minutes rather than seconds.  My plan was to do various shots at different times.  My first shot would start at 10 minutes and increase by 10 minutes with the following shot.

It was a perfectly still summer’s night, not a cloud in the sky, the moon was big, bright and bold.  I’d already completed my first shot and was on my second when I noticed clouds in the far horizon coming my way but it looked like it would be a while before they would reach me. By the 10-minute mark cloud had already obscured the moon and although the scene was still lit it was now dimmer and the light much softer.  I realised that I would need to increase the exposure and ended up extending the time to 40 minutes.  What I thought would be a disaster turned out to be a winner.
