Gentle Giants

Halliday Bay  QLD

Square, Aspect 1:1
Captured with Medium Format Velvia 50 Film

It was still very dark when I arrived at this location and didn’t know exactly where and what I would be shooting.  The tide was low and the slippery rocks made moving difficult with a heavy camera pack and tripod but knew I was running out of time as the horizon was beginning to glow.  Not wasting any more time I set up the camera and waited for the morning to come, and come it did in the most spectacular fashion.  The depth and vibrance only lasted for a brief moment and I already knew I had nailed it before even seeing the developed negatives.

Sunrises have a way of sneaking up on you and before you realise it’s too late and you’ve missed it – the window of opportunity is very small.  Over the years I found that getting to a location well before the predicted sunrise is the key, sometimes it is difficult because of the darkenss and finding a suitable spot.  Many times I’d find myself running as I could see the sky beginning to wake.
