A man shuffles slowly along the opposite side of the street, walking stick in hand. Our eyes meet, and he decides to approach me. He may be younger than he looks, but years on the streets have taken their toll. His kind eyes and gentle manner mesmerize me as he places his hands together in a quiet gesture—does he seek money, food, or simply offer gratitude?
I raise my camera, signaling my intent to take his photo. He does not object, and I take that as permission. As he stands there, I capture his image. An awkward moment lingers before his silent spell breaks, and I continue my exploration of the city.
