Tibetan Buddhists use prayer wheels, or “mani wheels,” as sacred cylindrical devices to enhance meditation and accumulate spiritual merit. They traditionally craft these wheels from wood, metal, or stone and inscribe them with sacred mantras, most commonly “Om mani padme hum,” a phrase that represents compassion and enlightenment. They beleive spinning the wheel has the same effect as verbally reciting the mantra, helping to purify negative karma, generate positive energy, and deepen spiritual practice.
Historians trace their origins to ancient Buddhist traditions and link them to revolving bookcases in Chinese monasteries. Spinning the wheel embodies the concept of “turning the wheel of Dharma,” symbolizing the spread of Buddhist teachings and the pursuit of enlightenment.
