In Kathmandu, prayer flags are a vibrant part of the cultural and spiritual landscape. Known as “Lung ta” (Wind Horse) in Tibetan, these colorful flags represent the five elements: blue for sky, white for air, red for fire, green for water, and yellow for earth. Inscribed with prayers and mantras like “Om Mani Padme Hum,” they are believed to spread goodwill when fluttered by the wind. You can find them atop stupas, temples, and mountain passes, with prominent sites like Boudhanath and Swayambhunath Stupa displaying thousands.
Recently, there has been a shift toward using biodegradable flags to reduce environmental impact, promoting sustainability in the community. Prayer flags continue to enhance Kathmandu’s aesthetic and serve as a reminder of spiritual heritage.
